Brilliant Ideas has made further investment in Levelling Shims

Known as Stacker Packers, we’ve made a further investment into our engineered levelling shims by undertaking extensive independent testing and amending the design.

But first, here’s a glimpse of the testing results which compares Stackers to its competing system.

Independent Testing

This is how both sets of Shims performed during testing on a 50mm shim stack: Stacker Packers – Photo on the left

Made from High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
In testing, our Shims were taken up to circa 145kN (14.78T)
The vertical deformation of our system was 0.38% (0.19mm)

Competing System – photo on the right

In testing, the competing Shims were taken up to circa 148kN (15.08T).
The load vs displacement graph strongly suggests the stack would show permanent damage at around the 85kN (8.66T) mark, and serious deformation at 100kN (10.19T)
The vertical deformation of this system was 19.40% (9.70mm)

So why the difference? The Stacker Packer system has less voids, resulting in a larger load bearing surface area of 27% greater than the competing system - that’s why the results vary so much.

Amended Design

We’ve altered the design of our 5mm and 10mm shims – so when they’re inverted, both loaded surfaces are completely flat. We’ve also introduced the Brilliant Ideas logo. Stacker Packers are load rated at 30N/mm² (under factored load) and ensure safe and stable structure during installation. They’re suitable for a multitude of applications where the levelling shims are required to be load bearing - they’ve been used on top-tier Football Clubs, La Sagrada Familia Basilica, Sandwell Aquatics (2022 Commonwealth Games), Lords Cricket Ground and Wimbledon Court One – to name a few. These interlocking shims and are a good alternative to steel shims – they’re lighter, easy to carry around site, and cost less. Applications – steel frame buildings, precast concrete components, modular pods and buildings.
